THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANTS

Choral Speaking Version

This choral speaking version of THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANTS includes a variety of speaker experiences. As in most choral speaking, CHORUS SPEAKERS speak in unison together. But, in an effort to bring needed variety of sound and a composer’s touch to the choral expression of this piece, you may find that:

  1. SOLO SPEAKERS speak special lines.
  2. ALL BOYS and/or ALL GIRLS speak in unison together.
  3. SPECIAL QUARTETS speak in unison together.
  4. CHARACTER SPEAKERS (Grasshopper and Ants) speak character lines.

1CHORUS:There once was a grasshopper
2SOLO SPEAKER 1:Who was in a party mood
3CHORUS:She sang away the summer days
4And ate up all her food!
5GRASSHOPPER:Yo-hoo, that's me!
6It's true, it's true
7I ate up all my food!
8CHORUS:Hey grasshopper Gal!
9Hate to burst your bubble
10There’s a moral to this tale
11YOU’RE headed straight for trouble!
12GIRL'S CHORUS:When winter came she realized
13She’d made a big mistake
14She hadn’t saved a thing to eat
15And how her tummy ached
16GRASSHOPPER:I haven’t saved a thing to eat
17And now my tummy aches!
18CHORUS:Hey grasshopper Gal!
19Hate to burst your bubble
20There’s a moral to this tale
21YOU’RE headed straight for trouble!
22BOY'S CHORUS:The ants who lived next door to her
23Had planned ahead, in fact
24Had worked throughout the summer heat
25To store up food out back
26ANT QUARTET:Did you ever, did you ever
27Meet a group of ants so clever?
28CHORUS:Hey grasshopper Gal!
Hate to burst your bubble
There’s a moral to this tale
YOU’RE headed straight for trouble!
29GIRL'S QUARTET:And when our dear grasshopper
30Came begging for some bread
31BOY'S QUARTET:The ants just shook their heads and said
32ANT QUARTET:"You’re going to end up dead!!"
33CHORUS:Hey grasshopper Gal!
Hate to burst your bubble
There’s a moral to this tale
YOU’RE headed straight for trouble!
34GRASSHOPPER:O.K., O.K., I’ve heard enough!
35So what’s the moral? Tell me please!
36SOLO SPEAKER 2:I bet the moral’s full of DON’TS!
37SOLO SPEAKER 3:Don’t sing away the summer?
38SOLO SPEAKER 4:Don’t party ‘til you’re fed?
39SOLO SPEAKER 5:Don’t waste your days just having fun?
40SOLO SPEAKER 6:Don’t lounge around in bed?
41CHORUS:NO!
42SOLO SPEAKER 7:The moral of this story is:
43CHORUS:IT’S SMART TO PLAN AHEAD!
